"Ground Floor"
The "Ground Floor" project at Gin Gallery, Shanghai in October/November/December 2006 is trying to bring together several international cultures. An Irish and Belgian artist will expose their works together in a Chinese gallery during the 2006 Biennale of Shanghai, which has the theme "Over the Sea" and invites mostly international artists to merge their different cultures and art styles. One of the themes of the "Ground Floor" expo will be contrast, but another will be junction: different cultures clashing and coinciding, working together to realize this project.

The name "Ground Floor" is a more than obvious reference to the architectural background of Nigel Peake's work. But more so, it's a reference to a place where several cultures gather. At the ground floor, there's no elevation or layering, no differences in domination or culture, it's a place where we are all equal, no matter where we came from.

To emphasise this contrast and junction, during their stay the artists will produce several works (t-shirts, posters, furniture) in cooperation with local experienced craftsmen.






Ephameron

The art Ephameron makes is sensitive: with images and small texts she tries to recreate everyday feelings and thoughts, to capture moments in life with her art. Recurring themes like hands, birds and girls live in her fantasy world of emotions, colourless backgrounds and huge black tape drawings. Addicted to model drawing and office supplies, Ephameron dislikes to make up a concept behind her art. Her weapon of choice is a 2B pencil teamed up with 80g white paper and her drawings / collages / digital paintings / photographs reflect ephemeral and trivial aspects of life. Ephameron collects toys, books and movies, and is very materialistic. She can't stand girls who wear high heels and pretend to be comfortable in them. But maybe she's just jealous.

Ephameron graduated in fine arts and illustrative design a couple of years ago. Now she's a freelance illustrator, graphic designer, web designer, photographer and painter. Previous clients include Weekend Knack, De Standaard Magazine, Modart, The Bulletin, Bries Publishing, Mekanik Strip, Brooklyn, Nokia and Lonsdale. In her free time Ephameron likes to contribute to and organize worldwide exhibitions in a.o. Rome, Paris, Bordeaux, Lausanne, Vienna, Linz, Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Rotterdam, The Hague and Tilburg. Solo exhibitions in Paris and Amsterdam are coming up.

Her award-winning website www.ephameron.com has been an ongoing art project since 2000, her first book Love/Pain was recently published by Bries in Antwerp.



Nigel Peake

Nigel Peake is an artist from Ireland who trained as an architect. After having completed his Master in architectural design, Nigel graduated from architecture with his thesis, "Istanbul Borderland", that was awarded a Commendation by the Royal Institute of British Architecture. During his studies he took part in several exhibitions in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Nigel's drawings are involved with the city, nature and reverie. Last year his clients included Coldcut (Ninja Tune Records), Eastpak, EMI and Automaton snowboards.

The exhibition in Shanghai will essentially bring aspects of his everyday experiences to a new foreign city. He wants to bring his art, made in his local area population of twelve people, to a city of 14 million inhabitants. The month in Shanghai will create new experiences, drawings and maps to be used for an exhibition in Edinburgh in May of next year.
